Fields within the Graduate Programme in Business

Within the graduate programme in business, courses are offered for several fields, or tracks as we call them.

Accounting track (from September 2005)
Accounting is gathering and using information about the planning, control, and performance of an economic entity. Research in accounting at Tilburg University spans a range of topics almost as broad as that definition. Faculty are exploring how firms use accounting for performance measurement and incentive purposes, how market agents use accounting information in capital markets, the manner in which firms respond to tax rules, and the economic role of auditors.

We are committed to the advancement and dissemination of knowledge through excellence in our research. The Research Group encourages members to publish in top-tier international journals. We have developed a critical mass of research active members in a number of key areas of accounting. While the areas of interest and methodology of the group's members are diverse, a common feature is the use of economics as disciplinary foundation. This allows the group to capitalize optimally upon the existing strengths in CentER. All group members actively contribute to its research profile and substantial resources are allocated to support these contributions.

Finance track
The Finance PhD programme admits highly motivated students of exceptional quality. Its goal is to train these students for academic and non-academic positions in the world's leading Universities and Research Institutes. This is achieved through the initial training in our Research Master programme, and the creation of an exceptional research atmosphere within the Finance group. The courses in the programme are given by members of the Finance Research group, but also include topic courses given by visitors. An undergraduate training with a quantitative background and excellent results provides a perfect background to embark upon this programme.

The Finance group is among the top in their field in Europe with its members publishing in the leading Finance journals as the Journal of Finance and the Journal of Financial Economics, as well as blue ribbon Economics journals. The group consists of a broad selection of experts in both investment analysis and corporate finance. Its broadness is one of the strong points and provides an excellent environment for PhD students. The Finance group maintains close contacts with the financial industry which implies a quick access to new market developments and data. The group hosts an impressive visitor programme and a bi-weekly seminar series.

Marketing track
The most important objective of the track in Marketing is to prepare students of exceptional talent and motivation for careers in research and teaching at the world's leading universities and research institutions. Undergraduate training in economics, econometrics, or other disciplines with a strong quantitative component provides an excellent background to undertake doctoral studies in marketing.

The CentER Marketing Research Group is one of the top-5 marketing departments in Europe, and faculty members frequently publish in the leading marketing journals. Members of our faculty collaborate on research with colleagues from other major universities throughout the world and maintain close relationships with numerous research agencies, including Verify International, and top market research agencies. We collaborate with these market research agencies through AiMark (the Center for Advanced International Marketing Knowledge). AiMark is located at Tilburg University and brings together a global network of leading academicians, market research agencies, an Internet information provider, and major fast moving consumer goods companies.

The Marketing Research Group sponsors a biweekly Research Seminar Series for the presentation and discussion of current research in marketing. Speakers include faculty and doctoral students from Tilburg University and many other universities. We also have an active visitors programme, and organise an annual Research Camp, which brings together eminent researchers from around the world.
